File storage

As a drive on your computer

Mounting file storage in Explorer or Finder – what it takes and what to watch out for.

You can mount file storage on your computer as if it were a network drive. The club's documents then sit in Explorer or Finder, and you open an invoice with a double click instead of going through the browser.

What appears there – and what does not

The drive shows exactly what you see in the app. No more: a folder that is not released for you does not appear there any more than it does here – not even as a name.

Read only, no filing

Through the drive you can open and copy files, but not put them in. For filing, use the app. That is deliberate: when uploading, the app counts how much space is used, checks the encryption and splits large files – a drive can do none of that.

Photos are not included. The chronicle stays in the app; it does not appear on the drive.

A helper program is needed

No operating system can talk to this storage on its own – not Windows, not macOS, not Linux. So you need a small, free program called rclone once. We supply the finished configuration; installing it is up to you.

Set up once, then never again

After the first time the drive starts with a double click – or automatically when you log in, if you put the shortcut into your startup folder.

Setting it up

Open Pictures and files → File storage and tap As a drive at the top.

Give the access a name that says which device it is for – "Treasurer laptop", "Office PC". Later you will use it to tell which one to revoke when a device goes away.

The app now shows the credentials and the steps for your operating system once. Copy both before you leave the page.

Follow the steps: install rclone, put the configuration file in place, run the command.

The credentials appear exactly once

They are stored nowhere – not with us either. If the text is gone before you have saved it, simply issue a new access and revoke the old one.

What each system needs

In addition to rclone you need WinFsp from winfsp.dev. That is the only step that requires administrator rights once.

Run the command afterwards in a normal command prompt – expressly not as administrator. Otherwise the drive belongs to the administrator account and your own does not see it.

The easiest way to install rclone is brew install rclone. If you download it instead, use the terminal rather than the browser – otherwise Gatekeeper holds the file back.

You do not need a kernel extension: the command uses rclone's built-in NFS server.

sudo apt install rclone (or your distribution's package), place the configuration, run the command. That is all.

When something changes

The access knows your folders as they were when it was issued. If that changes, the app reacts:

  • You lose a role or a folder is narrowed – the access is revoked. The drive stops working, and that is the point: it must not show anything you are no longer entitled to. Issue a new one.
  • A folder is added – the access stays but does not show the new folder. The app tells you; a new access takes it along.
  • You leave the club – all your accesses are closed immediately.
  • A device is lost – revoke the access in the app. Nothing else is needed.

One year, then again

An access is valid for one year. Fourteen days beforehand the app points it out. That is not red tape but a ceiling: a key that sits on a computer should not be valid forever.

One access per club

If you are in two clubs you need two accesses – one per club. An access always opens only the storage of the club in which you issued it.
